Today we discovered there is more than one way to Manteo. Wind shifts to the southwest this morning brought the smoke from fires burning in Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge directly in our path. By lunchtime at noon, with 25 miles down, visibility was reduced to under 1/2 mile and getting worse by the minute. Burning eyes, throats and general lack of oxygen proved even too much for the powers of the Little Runner Boy and his sidekick. With excellent help from Kelly at Goose Creek State Park, we conjured up a new plan of reaching Manteo via Ocracoke and the Outer Banks. Thanks so much Kelly!! So we packed up up our bags and we moved to Beverly Swan Quarter to take the ferry across. We made a few calls and solicited the help from David (day 5&6 crew mate) to find us a place to stay tonight.. David you rock....
The smoke cleared some when we got to Swan Quarter and we were one hour early for the ferry, Scott decided to put in another 5 miles before boarding.
So the new plan is to run from Ocracoke to Rodanthe via Hwy 12 (45 miles) and Friday we will continue north up 12 into and around (bridge to bridge) manteo .. Another 45 miles... So by this time on friday Scott will have logged well over 700 miles.
Stay tuned tomorrow for more adventures from Little Runner Boy .. or... How to make peanut butter and Yellow Fly sandwiches..
PS.. We must mention a gentleman named Wade who stopped Scott while running thru Washington. He told Scott he was a two time cancer survivor, thanked Scott for his efforts and gave Mindy a donation on the spot.
