Congratulations, Scott, on being named today's Village Pride Award honoree on WCHL radio. Not sure if they give plasma TVs or iPhones, but you deserve both!! Here's the media link to listen to the clip from the station.

I thought it might be interesting to some of you what a typical day in the life of running across the state of North Carolina entails.
5am
(LRB)--Get up, make sure legs are still there. Make sure legs still work. Make legs work and get you to bathroom
(Support team) Get up. Grumble at runner for making you have to get up at 5am :) Make coffee, go get coffee, steal coffee, bribe for coffee, sell your first born for coffee.
5:10
(LRB)take shower, get dressed, pop blisters that grew in t…

Congratulations to Scott Adams, who successfully completed his running journey across the state of North Carolina, finishing at 2:20 p.m. Friday, June 13. Presently, Scott is enjoying a meal hosted by friends and plans to update us soon on the details of his last day's trek.
In speaking briefly with Scott, he wished to thank his friends and family for their invaluable support that held him up through many a mile, one foot in front of the other.
We are all so proud and inspired by this accompli…

I must be honest. This morning was hard. I am not sure whether it was the knowing that I was only two days away from finishing or whether I truly hit some plateau. My arms seemed achy. My right leg forced me to grimace with each step because of an Achilles problem and a knee problem. Mentally, I was tired; I was unable to focus on anything but a long day of painful strikes for each step. This is not the way to get through a tough day. One cannot focus on the difficulties that one is facing by ma…

Today we discovered there is more than one way to Manteo. Wind shifts to the southwest this morning brought the smoke from fires burning in Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge directly in our path. By lunchtime at noon, with 25 miles down, visibility was reduced to under 1/2 mile and getting worse by the minute. Burning eyes, throats and general lack of oxygen proved even too much for the powers of the Little Runner Boy and his sidekick. With excellent help from Kelly at Goose Creek State Park, we con…

We had family day for the run today with a journey from Elm City to eight miles shy of Washington. Tyler listened to stories and yelled "love you dad" and Mindy put up with me. I must admit the heat and the miles are catching up with me. Though I had energy to run, my feet screamed from running on fire black roads and hot sand. We once again had a little detour adding another 1.5 miles to the end result with a total of 50 miles ending at 4:50PM.
Once again we rolled through farm lands as we have…

Friends -- Today, Scott finished his 48 miles (and change) strong! He continues. Amazingly! It is hard for me to determine which is better -- helping to raise money for cancer or helping this person who has worked so hard to accomplish this almost unbelievable goal. I say 'almost,' because if I didn't see it for myself, I'd have a hard time believing it! "Ultra Man" is his new super hero name. We decided this on the car ride home.
We started the morning at Sheetz with coffee, muffins and bagels…

Don't ask me how he did it. None of us can be really sure. But he did. Today Scott ran forty-eight miles (probably more, due to a detour around the airport) in the blistering heat. He did so with an incredible amount of inner strength and perseverance and an incredible amount of help from others. While he's icing his legs and recovering from the day, he wanted me to fill you in on how things transpired. So here goes:
The best part about today was the unending support from friends Scott had alon…

Today was a scorcher. Facing temperatures that approached 100 degrees, only knowing that tonight he would be with friends and family and the tremendous support that greeted him in his hometown, helped Scott log those 48 miles - getting ever closer to his final destination.
We started early like yesterday and tried to get in as many miles before that 2pm heat sweeps across the road in waves. Scott ran 1 1/2 hour increments and took 20 minute breaks to cool down and stretch his legs. Breaking it…

Jay Clark was a wonderful friend of mine who fought bladder cancer for 7 long years. His main goal was to see his son graduate from high school. Through all his pain, discomforts and the insults cancer caused on his body, he kept fighting and kept smiling. Just before he died he gave me a small little marble plaque. It reads "
If you think you are beaten you are; If you think you dare not, you don't; If you'd like to win but think you can't it is almost certain you won't. If you think you'll…

Although Day 10 has left Scott in the worst physical condition so far, there is a surprising buoyancy and optimism in his voice tonight. Perhaps it’s because he finished strong despite brutal heat, little shade, and fierce traffic between Winston-Salem and Greensboro. We started out just after sunrise, taking advantage of the cool morning air to get in a solid 30 miles before breaking for lunch. Scott took a pounding this afternoon, however, as the sun intensified and opportunities to find shade…

"The proudest 30 miles I've ever run", remarked Scott over a large plate of fettucini and an equally large plate of porkchops, mushroom risotto and broccoli. As Mindy mentioned, it had been a rough day but Scott's spirits are strong and as he also said, "tomorrow is another day." He said he started to feel an injury in his right thigh around mile 5 but persevered for another 25 miles before calling it a day. Hopefully with a combination of heat, ice and stretching he can get his legs back under…

Day nine proved to be a tough day. About five miles into the run this morning, Scott began to feel great pain in his leg (just above the knee on the inside). He ran through it for several miles, but finally the pain was such that he had to stop. He rested and treated the injury for a couple of hours and then began to run (hobble) again. In the end, he still managed to cover 31 miles today, which is pretty unbelievable.
This evening, he has been icing and treating the injured leg. He is very tir…

I lay here with bags of ice laced across my legs, six, one gallon bags to be precise. This is par for the course of each day out here while we venture across our beautiful state. After the first 20-30 minute icing (or as long as possible) we will go eat. We are all clean and presentable to restaurants of course :-) I ususally eat something on par of two meals at dinner. Later, on the good advice of friends, (Amanda and Jay) I drink an Ensure at night maybe even a beer too (but don't tell). Somet…

There was evening. There was morning. The seventh day. And even Scott rested. :-)
[Sorry Scott, I couldn't resist!]
In all seriousness, Scott did rest today in Montreat. I mean, even the Tour de France guys rest one day a week! I know his body needed the rest, for tomorrow morning begins again in Lenoir for a 48 mile run! His body, from his toes up, are feeling the miles, so a day off was good for him, I think. My mom, Minnie Sue Douglas and my aunt, Sally Meadors, will be his drivers on day 8…

47 miles today! And Scott is feeling it. He ran the Blue Ridge Parkway again, around Linville Falls area. Lot of hills for the first 15-20 miles. He had a little downhill after that, but then a long steep incline surprised him (the write-up about this part of the trail failed to mention it) and took a little more than the regular amount of mental energy to combat. But he did it. Sore feet tonight. Really sore. He continues to ice his joints in the evenings and that helps.
Jeremiah ran with him…

Today Jeremiah and I began our support of our crazy friend on this unbelievable journey. Scott & Jeremiah arose at 5:00am for a 6:30am departure. I stayed in bed till 6 and still managed to load the car, eat breakfast and do all my chores! We started right on time at 7am and the first 19 miles were just wonderful (at least from the car they were). The terrain was beautiful, running most of the morning along a stream. Jeremiah took to the road with Scott for a little over an hour and a half.…

Scott completed Day Four in good time and good spirits. He ran on the parkway and then into Black Mountain, where he is staying tonight. On this leg of the journey, he encountered a loud and strange noise about five miles before he reached the river. For those five miles he wracked his brain trying to figure out what the noise might be. When he reached the river, he was pretty sure he had his answer. Cicadas. If anyone knows for sure, please post a blog and share your information with us, as Sco…
