Don't ask me how he did it. None of us can be really sure. But he did. Today Scott ran forty-eight miles (probably more, due to a detour around the airport) in the blistering heat. He did so with an incredible amount of inner strength and perseverance and an incredible amount of help from others. While he's icing his legs and recovering from the day, he wanted me to fill you in on how things transpired. So here goes:

Day nine proved to be a tough day. About five miles into the run this morning, Scott began to feel great pain in his leg (just above the knee on the inside). He ran through it for several miles, but finally the pain was such that he had to stop. He rested and treated the injury for a couple of hours and then began to run (hobble) again. In the end, he still managed to cover 31 miles today, which is pretty unbelievable.

There was evening. There was morning. The seventh day. And even Scott rested. :-)

In all seriousness, Scott did rest today in Montreat. I mean, even the Tour de France guys rest one day a week! I know his body needed the rest, for tomorrow morning begins again in Lenoir for a 48 mile run! His body, from his toes up, are feeling the miles, so a day off was good for him, I think. My mom, Minnie Sue Douglas and my aunt, Sally Meadors, will be his drivers on day 8… Continue

47 miles today! And Scott is feeling it. He ran the Blue Ridge Parkway again, around Linville Falls area. Lot of hills for the first 15-20 miles. He had a little downhill after that, but then a long steep incline surprised him (the write-up about this part of the trail failed to mention it) and took a little more than the regular amount of mental energy to combat. But he did it. Sore feet tonight. Really sore. He continues to ice his joints in the evenings and that helps.

Scott completed Day Four in good time and good spirits. He ran on the parkway and then into Black Mountain, where he is staying tonight. On this leg of the journey, he encountered a loud and strange noise about five miles before he reached the river. For those five miles he wracked his brain trying to figure out what the noise might be. When he reached the river, he was pretty sure he had his answer. Cicadas.
